Ask any migraine sufferer about the pain of the headache and you will be told that it is the worst that there is. Women often compare it to the pangs of childbirth! A migraine attack is not just a headache; it can include nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity, blurred vision, dizziness and other symptoms. The worst part of migraines is that medicine has yet to come up with a way of preventing them or curing them when they do occur. All medication can do is to provide some amount of relief from the symptoms. That’s why using food to help fight the effects of a migraine is so important. Eating right can make all the difference to how a person bears up with a migraine and how often he gets one. This is what is called a migraine diet plan.

If you, or someone close to you, suffers from migraines, please pay attention to what follows. The basics of a migraine diet plan that follows can, if adhered to and slowly expended, relieve you of much of the pain of migraines but also improve the quality of your life.

What A Migraine Diet Plan Is

There are many foods that are commonly thought to trigger off migraines. The migraine diet plan is basically an eating plan that avoids all these foods and thus reduces the amount of things that can cause the migraines. These triggers range from red wine to prepared food to Chinese sauces to chocolates. The list is extensive. An internet search will provide you will a comprehensive list of migraine trigger foods. Put them all in your migraine diet plan as foods to be avoided. Unless you are a saint, it is unlikely that you will be able to live on only the foods that do not trigger migraines. But knowing what you should not be eating, as part of your migraine diet plan, make sit easier for you to control your diet and keep the amount of trigger foods you consume in control.

But that is just part of the migraine diet plan. Besides the commonly accepted general triggers, each person will have his or her own food sensitivities and thus certain foods that affect them and cause migraines. The only way to learn what these are and include them in your migraine diet plan is to keep a record of everything you eat and each time you have a migraine attack, check back on the foods you ate before that. You will soon notice certain trends or food groups that are associated with your migraines. These need to be added to your migraine diet plan.

A migraine diet plan cannot offer complete protection from a migraine episode. But it does offer a way of reducing the severity and frequency with which they do occur and make the medication you take more effective. And until medical science comes up with a complete cure, that is the best you can hope for.

The world is full of recipes – from how to make a ham sandwich to how to cook like a cordon bleu chef. So its not surprising that a search of the internet will reveal thousands upon thousands of migraine diet recipes. The aim of migraine diet recipes are threefold. Firstly they try to remove the triggers – types of food that bring on a migraine. Secondly they attempt to introduce food that helps to ward off migraines. And thirdly, they should promote overall good health.

What Makes For A Good Migraine Diet Recipe

The first thing to consider is that a migraine diet recipe is not medicine. It is meant to create food that is to be eaten and enjoyed, just like any other. Just like a vegetarian diet or a kosher one, eating to fight off migraines is a lifelong commitment and so the food that the migraine diet recipes creates should be tasty and appealing to the person eating it. Eating food that is tasteless or tastes bad can be as bad, over a period of time, as the migraine itself. So taste is a critical part of the migraine diet recipe.

Next comes weight control. Migraine diet recipes are not meant to help you lose weight. But being overweight can make migraines even more difficult to bear. Keep your weight loss effort, if you need it, separate from your migraine recipes and when reach the weight you want to be, then switch over to migraine diet recipes. These should be such that you do not start to put on weight again.

There are two types of food the recipes should avoid – the ones that are plain and simple not good for you. This is just common sense. The fitter your diet makes you; the better you will be able to fight off the migraines and also to bear with them when you do get them. The second food types that the recipes avoid are the migraine triggers – those foods that are commonly suppose to bring on a migraine. There is still much debate about what thee foods are, of start by doing some research, in books and on the internet, into what specific foods and ingredients should be kept out of a migraine diet recipe. These lists are never exhaustive and each person will have different triggers. You will need to keep a record of your migraine diet plan and identify which foods and ingredients’ are your own personal migraine triggers and remove those recipes from your list.

The search you do will also reveal some food groups that are supposed to be good in preventing migraines or helping you to fight off the headaches when they do occur. Add these to your migraine diet recipes.

Using migraine diet recipes does not make you an invalid. It is not something that will change who you are or how you live. All these recipes will do is to help you in your fight against migraines and by doing so, improve the quality of your life.
